The article deals with the contributions of instant messaging to library services in the U.S. in March 2006. Instant messaging, of course, simply involves using any of the three big chat clients to talk in real time through an Internet connection. These major clients are AOL Instant Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger and Microsoft Network Messenger. Instant messaging offers staff members of libraries a way to communicate electronically from wherever they happen to log on. Hence, they will prepared for the next wave of technology-based library outreach service.
