Abstract:

The article provides information regarding the informal history of digital reference in the U.S. The author infers that the first digital reference transaction is sadly lost to the midst of digital time. Depending on one's definition, the author adds that it was more than likely a one-off message , sent to some library that had early email capability from a user who taught of firing off a question to a librarian on a whim. Several complicated and occasionally frustrating issues arose as services grew and developed and took form.
