Abstract:

Describes Ask a Librarian, a free online query service launched on the Web in November 1997. The service was developed by Earl and is a reference enquiry point for anyone with access to the Internet. Users complete a short form detailing their query, name and e-mail address and the service will attempt to get an answer back to the enquirer within two working days. Front-line staff in 40 public libraries across the UK answer the queries on a rota system which involves each library being responsible for answering queries for a particular day. Describes the reception of the service by users and the library profession, types of questions asked, the very low budget required, and future plans for the service. The Ask a Librarian Web page is at [URL:http://www.earl.org.uk/ask/].
