Abstract:

An important aspect of reference services is the commitment to knowledge sharing — knowledge sharing that now, through virtual reference and online resources, can extend faster and further than librarians limited to the physical desk and the use of previous methods could have ever dreamed. Social media has expanded opportunities for provision of virtual reference to library users. With the advent of tools such as Facebook, librarians began evaluating and experimenting with this social medium as a new way to reach users. Ranges of reference services, including answering general questions and readers advisory via social media have been implemented with a varying degree of success.
