Abstract:
Contribution to an issue devoted to Librarians on the Internet: impact on reference services. First of a 2-part article that describes a collaborative project between 2 US library schools (at Maryland University and Long Island University) to develop tools for electronic reference services and to educate new information professionals in the provision of remote reference services. Gives the background to the project, while part 2 will report the results of the project and discuss the implications of the results for developing effective remote reference services and effective library school instruction in this field.
