Abstract:
Describes a project underway by the Colorado State Library, the Resource Sharing Board, and libraries through the state to create and fund the Collaborative Virtual Reference Service (CVRS), designed to be a statewide service that utilizes software specifically designed to provide 24/7 reference service to patrons via live interactive chat. Explains that the software will allow library staff from collaborating academic, public, school, and special libraries to provide reference service from a single, coordinated virtual reference desk, using an application service provider (ASP) model in which the software provider hosts and runs the software for CVRS. Discusses the need for a virtual reference service, specifically a collaborative reference service. Notes that the project has 39 participating libraries already (20 public, 15 academic, one school, and three special libraries), and other libraries will be allowed to join throughout the year.
