Abstract:
Inspired by the Silkeborg Public Library in Denmark, the Suffolk (NY) Cooperative Library System experimented for nearly a year with the concept of providing an interactive reference service, using NetMeeting software and Web cams. An array of problems caused a rethinking of the original concept, and a decision was made to focus on patrons, putting aside as a separate issue interest in Internet conferencing for training. The Suffolk County public libraries went live with a chat-based reference service dubbed Sunday Night Live! in September 2000, offering the service on Sunday nights from 5 PM to midnight. Provides some practical insights into how the project was launched with limited funding, what happened over the course of three months, lessons learned, and future plans.
