Abstract:
The Internet is invigorating library reference and information services as no other development in this generation. Using real-time virtual reference (VR) systems software, librarians now have the opportunity to demonstrate their professional expertise in new ways, and if done well, VR presents a way to gain a new group of library supporters. Presents an overview of virtual reference service, describes a number of projects already underway, and stresses the need for libraries to look for partnerships. States that libraries should not get stuck on the idea that VR services need to be 24/7 operations. Asserts that availability (in terms of extended hours) is much less important than the capability of offering VR services in real time to patrons and other information seekers. Identifies some of the tasks involved in preparing for the complicated process of implementing VR services, and offers some recommendations to guide libraries in this area.
