Abstract:

The honeymoon between virtual reference and academic libraries is over. Now comes the hard part-making sure, through effective marketing, that our users are aware of the benefits that the service can provide to them. Marketing has received increased attention in the library literature in recent years, and many authors describe what their libraries have done to promote virtual reference. However, these descriptions are often buried within larger works. This article draws from the literature a variety of real-life examples of marketing the service, in an effort to foster ideas and conversation about how best to increase awareness of virtual reference.
