Abstract:
College students' use of Instant Messenger (IM) was explored through focus group interviews to uncover how, why and with whom are students using IM to maintain their personal relationships. The students interviewed reported spending most of their IM time communicating with friends. In addition, these students indicated they use certain aspects of IM (such as the away message) not to only communicate information but to manage their identities. Finally, graphic accents such as emoticons and emotext are being heavily integrated as a part of IM, usually through the use of pull-down menus, making accessibility optimal. Overall, this study provides insight as to Instant Messenger's important impact on social connectedness among college students. Specific results and suggestions for future research are discussed.
