Abstract:
The article offers ideas to provide effective library services for the hearing impaired. Utilizing a telephone relay service, a hearing-impaired person can use a Teletypewriter/Telecommunications Device for the Deaf (TTY/TDD), a small apparatus connected to the telephone, to type in a message to an operator who has a similar device at his or her location. The operator can then communicate orally the written message to the person on the other end of the line. To improve the TTY/TDD service situation, librarians may want to consider offering their patrons contact through instant messaging (IM) tools. In addition, IM can also serve as virtual reference and quick internal communication among library staff. INSET: Links for Learning More.
