Abstract:

This article discusses chat reference interactions between librarians and patrons. Research focused on the importance of rapport building between librarians and patrons, including the use of informal language, praise and unscripted greetings. Emoticons can also be used as a substitute for body language during chat interactions. The article also details the difficulties of relational disconnection, occurring when the two partners in the conversation do not understand each other.; This article discusses chat reference interactions between librarians and patrons.
